During the late nineties Cable & Wireless acquired several cable franchises across the country. One of these was Bell Cable Media (BCM) who had 5 franchises based in Leeds, Anglia, London, South Herts and Wearside. The nationwide "SPICE" project was initiated once C&W had made a strategic decision to consolidate all the systems of their acquisitions on an AS400. For this particular franchise, C&W needed to migrate approximately 500,000 ex BCM customers and their associated cable TV and telephony data. The project commenced in April of 1998 and the new system went live in October of 1998.
Redwood Systems were responsible for data mapping, program design and build, and execution both during the iterative development process and at go live. Further analysis produced the specifications for all the Quality Assurance that the migration required. Reconciliation and integrity scripts were developed from these specifications.Functional areas of the systems migrated included:
Accounts Receivable. Provisioning. Tolls. Memos. Premises. Network. Customer Details. Disputes. Work-Force Management. Inventory.
12 months history was migrated in all these areas.
The major complication of this migration was the fact that all 5 franchises were migrated concurrently into the target. Great care needed to be taken to avoid duplication to preserve the uniqueness of every single record from every single file from every single database. Added to this was the fact that each franchise had its nuances within its own customisation of SMS, with particular regard to the use of parameters.
The data manipulation was performed on the AS400 in a dedicated migration environment.Although the streaming of the migration of the 5 franchises was concurrent, it was somewhat overlapping because of differences in the volumes of data and the time constraints of the migration window.
