Data migration

What is Data migration?

Fundamentally, Data migration is the movement of data from one database to another with each database possibly (but not necessarily) having similar data structures, usually in order to support the implementation of an organisation's new application. The data structures, however, will differ according to the functional requirements of the overriding application, which usually results in a more complex transition.

Why does the need arise?

The need can arise due to many factors, including:

  • Changing Systems due to
  • Industry Advances
  • Lack of Scalability/Functionality/Support with Legacy Applications
  • Consolidation of Businesses
  • Mergers and Acquisitions

What problems are encountered?

The problems can fall into many categories, including:

  • Business expectations
  • Moving targets
  • Legacy Data cleanliness
  • Lack of detailed Legacy application knowledge
  • Achieving timely implementation
  • Unrealistic Deadlines
  • Mid-project marketing initiatives

High on the list, however, is usually the lack of understanding of the mechanics of Data migration. Project schedules typically pay little or no attention to the complexity of Data migration and the need for migration specific testing processes.

Focus is often geared towards the 'new application' and as Data migration will never be viewed as the glamorous part of a project it remains more of a poor cousin.

Data migration needs to receive a profile rating in-line with any development project it accompanies.

Preparing for a Data migration

To prepare for and execute a successful Data migration, we recognize that Data migration is more than the act of transporting data from one system to another. There is a methodology behind all migrations, which needs to be refined for each customer.

Key components

  • Definition of Business Rules. What goes, what stays?
  • Profiling of
  • Data Models
  • Table Columns
  • Table Interdependencies
  • Redundant Data
  • Design/Architecture and Development and 'Cut-over' planning
  • Transformation Mapping.
  • Testing
  • Integrity
  • Reconciliation and Acceptance Criteria
  • System Matching. Do we have in the target what we had in the Legacy?
